Where children play to learn

Exploring with Scissors

on November 15, 2013

What a lovely week with the nice weather.  I am really enjoying our new theme of ‘Pete the Cat’, as there is so much to explore with the stories, and the kids seem to love the repetivitive songs and language used.  The last 2 weeks we have been exploring our school and meeting some different staff that work in our school.  We also made a school bus and are starting to talk about some rules that you might need when rising a bus.  Our school house has been a hit with many of the children, and it is so fun listening to their conversations as they play teacher and student.  We also used scissors for the first time thsi year during our School Bus craft.  I would encourage you to buy a pair of scisors for your child to start exploring with.  You can get a good pair at the dollar store.  Remind your child to put their thumb in the small hole and fingers in the big hole.  They also should keep there thumb up when cutting, and use their helper hand to hold the paper.  Some fun and simple cutting ideas are to cut pictures out of old magazines, cut paint strips apart, and cut straws into pieces and use the pieces for lacing.  At this stage, children are not expected to be able to follow a line when cutting.  It is about exploring and having fun, and starting to build the strength in their hands, as well as using both hands to comlpete a task.

Next week we are going to delve more deeply into Pete the Cat I Love my White shoes.  We will make a Pete the Cat Puppet for the kids to take home, and continue to practice our cutting skills with some abstract color art.  We will also learn 2 of Pete’s favourite nursery rhymes.  ‘Mary had a Little Lamb’, and ‘The 3 Little Kittens that lost their Mittens’.  December Scholastic book order are due next Friday.  The Pete the Cat stories are in them this month as well.
